The Barrel House Vipers bring together some of the most talented players from the UK's vibrant jazz and swing scenes. Known for their energetic performances, they’ve toured across Europe, America, and the UK, specialising in the rich sounds of early jazz and blues.
What sets the Barrel House Vipers apart is their distinctive blend of rich vocal harmonies and original arrangements. Their repertoire pays homage to legends like Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller, and Louis Armstrong, while also unearthing lesser-known gems. This musical versatility comes from the band's core members: Rachel Lawrence (vocals, washboard, accordion), Bill Frampton (double bass, harmonica), and Gus Dolding (tenor banjo, clarinet, guitar), who all play multiple instruments, ensuring a dynamic and varied sound throughout their performances.
The Vipers’ lineup expands with various dynamic soloists they’ve met during their travels, featuring instruments typical of a 20’s - 30’s dance band, such as trumpet, piano, trombone, reeds, and violin.
Formed in Bristol, the Barrel House Vipers have played together in numerous projects, including Henry’s Hot Six, The Gin Bowlers, The Kitchen Syncopators, and Around About Dusk. Their rich performance history includes appearances at the Ferrara Buskers Festival, Glastonbury Festival, and in the jazz heartlands of New Orleans and Europe.
